I wonder if maybe they started out there having a drink, then something happened - might've been where the blood came from? - so they left, and then the water and stuff ended up there after whatever happened at the aquarium...? Like, whoever came out of whatever happened got chased by the octopus?

Could be the same place got hit up at different times of the night.
