[I'm going to hazard a guess and suppose chemical burns would probably be pretty noticeable on fur, so Filbo being pristine is perhaps a great sign he didn't come in contact with lye or chloroform. There's some blackish soot on his paws but that's because he just grabbed the burnt wool like three minutes ago.
