WEEK TWO - TRIAL

Hello, deadlings. Wow. Just...wow.

You may have been wondering what you could possibly do in the aftermath of yesterday's beek. Your demons weren't entirely helpful, and it seems that there were no answers to be found. But on Saturday morning at 11am, you'll soon hear a sound coming from the dock. There's a large ferry waiting for you, and even if you resist you'll eventually find yourself compelled to climb aboard and set off on a short voyage. The islands around you look fairly blurry, but you don't go very far before you stop at a slab of land with two large buildings stationed. The Execution Bar is locked tight and you won't be able to head in that direction. Instead, once again, your feet navigate you to the building on the right as the door creaks open.

Inside is a bar. It's dimly lit in several places, but bright enough for you to see each other and navigate without running into the furniture. Tables and chairs are scattered around in front of the bar counter, and the floor is far less sticky than the bar on the other island. Stained glass windows decorate the walls depicting images of humanity's suffering, and concrete crosses and tombstones are gathered in the corners. The bar itself is fully stocked with all types of alcohol and mixers, along with an array of bar food to help keep your energy up.

At the head of the room lounging among the statues of saints and the Blessed Virgin are Blue Hawaiian, Cosmopolitan and Midori.

Above them hangs another hand-painted banner, sloppily thrown together.

CONGRATS ON YOUR TRIAL!
12pm - 9pm
Vote or suffer eternal damnation

You can try to leave, but the door to the bar has been locked. All of the windows are reinforced, and there isn't another way out. You've been called here for one reason...let the misery begin!

Hello, and welcome to your third trial! Over the course of the next nine hours, characters will have the opportunity to discuss, investigate and theorize about this week's murder! Characters will have time to examine the body of the victim and explore relevant locations.

There will be a mod-tag break between 4pm EST/1pm PST to 5pm EST/2pm PST. While the trial may continue and players can tag each other, mod-led threads such as questions and investigations will be on hold.

Finally, we have a voting page for characters to vote on the culprit! Please be sure to read this page carefully and that your vote is in by the time trial finishes (9pm EST/6pm PST).

Good luck, and have fun!

CATHERD TIME

[Whoever thought it was a good idea to give Thancred a whistle? Regardless he's got one, which is also why a sharp trill rings out through the assembled denizens of the trial bar.]

All right. We're growing short on time and tossing about idle theories larboard and starboard is only going to have us going round in circles. Why don't we all take what we know and start walking through what we think happened?

The sequence of events from the night of the murder, beginning to end as best we can. Where and how do we think this all began?

[JUMPS at the loud noise]

Whoa, that's definitely one way to get someone's attention!

[...]

I feel like the aquarium had to be in the middle of it? 'Cause like... the glasses at the bar don't make sense if whatever went down in the aquarium happened first. You wouldn't just sit down and have a drink with someone when a killer octopus is on the loose.

We know a good deal of blood and destruction occurred in the onsen. It is quite possible the murder took place there, although the real Cosmos was found in the aquarium, and the false one also had its head bashed in. So perhaps the false Cosmos was killed in the onsen and the real one in the aquarium, but for what reason I am uncertain.

[even though they aren't bad yet.]

In any event, at some point in the night, the aquarium glass was bashed in. A bloody handprint was left on the glass. The octopus or a body was dragged into the bar. Three drinks were had - the impulse control drink, the persuasion drink, and a glass of water.

I would guess that occurred before whatever happened in the onsen.

[Pondering...]

Are we sure it was dragged? It seems ludicrous to think the octopus could've made it into the bar by itself, but...

[BUT EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS CASE IS ABSURD so like]

An octopus can travel pretty far out of water, actually. They're notorious escape artists in enclosures, nevermind one from Hell, so keepers will find them in the most insane places.

It could've moved on its own easily.

[He nods in response, taking that in.]

I've only ever seen them in the ocean or at the fish market, myself.

I've never seen one in person outside of a tank, but the stories and photos or videos are numerous. Things are smart.

This one terrorized Teach, D.va, and I all throughout the Subnutica tunnels as a doll with tentacles, so I feel like it probably has more range than a normal octopus would.

[Taking in the new information about the lip stain being blood...]

Does this imply that the drinking happened after the "CPR," or is it too inconclusive to tell?

[Sorry I forgot the top half of my comment but he's just nodding in agreement with Kon]

And who do we think consumed each of the three drinks? We suspect the octopus had the persuasion drink, if memory serves, but what of the other two?

Perhaps we've reached the point where it is worth considering motive.

[she's chewing on her lip quite hard.]

Earlier, it was proposed an accident could have occurred. The octopus mistaken for Cosmos by someone under the influence of the drink that damages your impulse control.

If that were to be the case, what would we propose to do about it?

[sips water]

I really, really, really hate to say this, but... what can we do? Our options are "vote for whoever did it" even if it wasn't something they'd do in their right mind, or "vote for someone we know didn't do it just because" at this point...

[personal profile] refate 2023-02-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Because there'd be consequences for not voting at all, I imagine, and we already know what happens to the person that's voted for.

I don't disagree, necessarily. I suspect it is correct to have the conversation rather than to shy away from it.

If the culprit is someone who is...cared for, and the intention wasn't there...are we committing to ending their life? If so, we ought to be able to speak our intention aloud.
ontrend: (026)

[personal profile] ontrend 2023-02-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
...if the intention wasn't there, then I think that person needs to speak up and explain so we can all talk about it together and figure out what to do.

Because if they keep quiet and drag this out until the very end, we have to assume they're keeping quiet on purpose and are okay with someone else dying in their place.

[personal profile] ontrend 2023-02-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like I said, our options are "vote for who did it once we're sure" or "vote for someone we know didn't".

[personal profile] failbo 2023-02-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what he said. Something needs to be done. I mean, we can't blame the octopus and call it a day.

[Even though Midori says we should]

...guess may as well prepare ourselves from now until the trial is over to be ready to vote.

[Filbo says as if he wasn't ready to vote right now because hey, he came to this trial to vote for whoever killed his friend, and he hasn't changed his mind about that. Once the week is over he's going to regret this somewhat insensitive way of thinking towards the possible culprit, so much, especially if it's really Lavi, but for now he already feels ready to vote]

[Childe nods in agreement with this part. He is also not an idiot and can see where things are headed, so--]

If this is how it is, I intend to throw my vote. But I suspect that even if a lot of others did the same, it wouldn't outweigh those who won't want to risk an accidental majority taking out a completely unrelated party.

[So. He doesn't expect his throwaway vote to accomplish anything, but, y'know. That's the point.]
