WEEK SEVEN: ENDGAME

Rise and shine, little deadlings. It's the dawn of the final day. The oppressive heat of Hell seems to rise and fall around you, and no matter where you slept last night you'll find that all of the islands across this realm are buzzing with excitement. You all know what comes next. Take some time, gather yourselves, and maybe even have some breakfast. Pick out your best party outfits and brush up on your etiquette. At about eleven in the morning, all participants single-dead and double-dead will find themselves on the receiving end of a new DM.

party starts in an hour!! if you're not in line now, you're gonna miss the start!!

Better start making your way to those wrought-iron gates at the edge of the city. You can see it now, the giant mansion situated at the top of the volcano, but it's still a distance away. The line seems to crawl, slowly, and as you draw closer you'll see several demons and humans being let through and just as many being turned away. But you? Lucky you...as you approach, a flickering shadow three times your size looks you over before letting you through the gate. There's a bridge strung over a pool of lava, wobbling with your every step as your skin practically boils you alive.

But then...as you approach the front doors? The Mansion Welcomes You.

Come on in! You were invited, after all. The party's just getting started but there isn't a shortage of humans and demons already milling around the property as music blasts from all directions. Immediately as you enter, you'll see a large sign hanging in the foyer advertising today's drink-off. There's also a list of names under it:

I can hardly kiss thin air. And since you didn't choose, I did it for you. I'm not beholden to the tried and true "permanent grudge because you tried to kill me" -- then I'd have a lot less friends. I'll love you unconditionally.

[ that last part would get her because four is a chump easily swayed by the words love unconditionally, but like........ ]

I wonder. You can't really explain what you never had yourself, can you? But if I can make a family where I had none, and it's nice -- at least to me, then I don't see why the same can't go for love as well.

Still, it's not something you can just put into words. It's dream and desire, to be wanted by something in this world.

I think there is very little love in this world or any world, but it can exist and it does exist for others. It can exist because of others

Is love and acceptance something you're seeking?

I told you over and over again, didn't I?

"Everyone wants to be loved".

[ Just sometimes you grow up so fucked up that normal romance and traditional love is cringe and you can only exist on really weird interpretations of it. ]

.... I don't know. There are some who make it so convincing that they don't want that, but I don't think I could be like that.

Can you want something even if you don't know what it is?

Of course you can.

That's what makes a dream a dream.

If we all knew what everything was like, then we would eventually stop wanting for it.

Why would you say you'd love me unconditionally when you know I've had trouble accepting you?

Because one, honestly, I've clearly not got a traditional interpretation of the word.

[ She's not delusional to that. She loves things like they're things, like a creator loves their creation, something like that. Maybe. It's really, really complicated. ]

Would I bother to change the world that hates me so if I wasn't capable, just a little bit, of finding something in it worth seeing?

It doesn't need to be a good thing, but it's better than nothing at all.

[ she shuts her eyes. she knows her own love is twisted once she lets herself be honest with herself, as much as she can love anyone or anything.

she envies because she can see the good and worth in people. ]

You also were fine with leaving the world you wanted to change behind.

They're one and the same. What cannot change must be broken. I sought change, and to do so, I figured I'd smash it up a bit -- because it wasn't willing to do so otherwise.

And in that new world, there isn't a place for me. Yes, I want the change, but I am a product of old cruelty, and that won't change. I was raised by and live by bloodshed and harm. I let myself become the pinnacle of torment and violence because someone had to be the nail driven into the glass, but such tactics would be obsolete in the new world I imagine.

[ In some ways, maybe she's more alike her father than she wants to admit -- if you love a thing, let it go. ]

If the new world I sought to have won't accept me, it's not a world I want either.

[ so in this way, eto's love is more pure than four's even if it's unconventional. ]

Whether you or I are a product of old cruelty, why must we be left behind?

[ four is someone who runs, but she can't let go. she doesn't want to let go of love, whatever that looks like for her. ]

I was left behind, first. That's how it begins, so that's how it always is.

Once again, we can only do what we are taught. We learn from the world's egg, and as long as we're within it...

she shakes her head. ]

That's why the world should be destroyed. [ four doesn't know just how much she is a product of nature. ] That egg should be cracked and broken. The chick grows beyond it. Outside of it. Despite it.

We don't all get what we want. Some worse than others. If the world itself was a book, it would surely be a tragedy.

It is tragedy. I don't want a happy ending for everyone. I don't care if it's neat for anyone. I only wanted a page that wasn't full of bloodshed, for me.
